Azerbaijan researches relation between activation of mud volcanoes and quakes

The Republican Seismological Service Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (AMEA) is conducting work on installation of seismic telemetry stations in the Caspian Sea.

Gulam Babayev, lead researcher of the AMEA Institute of Geology, says that this is very important because it will allow identifying in what areas of the Caspian Sea an earthquake should be expected.

"The more there will be such stations, the more opportunities will be for scientists to conduct research. Our seismic stations enable to register micro-earthquakes. We are also conducting research on how to define the relationship between the activation of mud volcanoes and earthquakes".

"However, the subject of earthquakes is very unpredictable, and it all depends on the dynamics of the processes taking place in the bowels of the earth," he said.
